Safety

The Silverado HD’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Sierra HD and is not available with Pro.

Both the Silverado HD and Sierra HD offer Rear Cross Traffic Alert, but the Silverado HD has Rear Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Sierra HD’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Silverado HD and the Sierra HD have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

Warranty

There are over 73 percent more Chevrolet dealers than there are GMC dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Silverado HD’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 15 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 7th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet above average in long-term dependability. With 21 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, GMC is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Chevrolet 1 place higher in reliability than GMC.

Engine

The Silverado HD’s 6.6 turbo V8 diesel produces 25 more horsepower (470 vs. 445) and 65 lbs.-ft. more torque (975 vs. 910) than the Sierra HD’s 6.6 turbo V8 diesel.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Silverado HD has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Sierra HD not available doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Silverado HD has larger standard tires than the Sierra HD (245/75R17 vs. 235/80R17).

The Silverado HD’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 75 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Sierra 3500 HD’s standard 80 series tires. The Silverado HD LT/LTZ/High Country’s optional tires have a lower 60 series profile than the Sierra HD’s optional 65 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Silverado HD LT/LTZ/High Country offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Sierra HD’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Payload and Towing

The Silverado HD’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Sierra HD’s (18000 vs. 16410 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Silverado HD’s standard power windows allow the driver or passenger to lower and raise the windows without leaning over or being distracted. Power windows cost extra on the Sierra HD.

The Silverado HD’s standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over. Power locks cost extra on the Sierra HD.

The Silverado HD LTZ/High Country’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Sierra HD’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Silverado HD offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Sierra HD doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Recommendations

The Chevrolet Silverado outsold the GMC Sierra by over two to one during 2022.
